Today is my mom's birthday, so in honor of her, I'm going to give a shout-out to all of the awesome grandparents out there. I know that not all babies are blessed with having a set, two sets, or even more if you throw in the great and/or step-grandparents. But for those who are, those babies will never know how much of a blessing they are to them. And we, the parents, need to be thankful for the help that we receive from granny and gramps on a constant basis...whether we want or need it at the time.
My mom stayed with me through my entire labor at the hospital. Although I did have a strong desire to kick her out of the room at one point when, during my 45 minutes of pushing, she started talking to the nurse about her children and how cute they are and if they had any vacation plans this summer (the nurse had a picture of her kids taped to her name tag). Um, excuse me?! Woman having a baby here! Anyway...my mom, who I endearingly refer to as Momma, even came home with us and stayed for the first two nights. She would have stayed longer, but I wanted to be a big girl and pretend like I didn't need the help. When the next baby comes, I'm just going to ask her to move in for a month... or two.
Grandparents love our (parents) sweet little babies. They can spoil them, love on them, and really appreciate them without worrying about a daily schedule - hey, they're sending them home later, so who cares about nap time, anyway?! I really appreciate not only my mom and dad, but John's parents as well. Both sets are a constant help - whether they're buying Tristan a few more outfits at the outlet mall, picking up some extra formula or baby food just because, or even offering to keep him so that John and I can go out for a little while on a real.. wait for it... DATE.
If you're blessed to have a grandparent in your baby's life, appreciate it!! If they've been of any help to you whatsoever, be thankful. I know that sometimes leaving the babies with someone else can be stressful, but oh how it makes Nana, Papa, Gam Gam and Pappy's day. Hey, if they've made it to grandparent status, I'm pretty sure they've passed as parents.
Even if your baby doesn't have a set of "real" grandparents, if there's someone else in his or her life who has played a part in that role, take a few minutes just to say "thank you". Life is too short not to show appreciation and affection to those who truly deserve it. And who knows? Maybe one day... in 127 years... we'll be grandparents as well and can get payback with the whole "who cares about a nap?" routine.
So to my mom, Nana, happy birthday. And to all of Tristan's grandparents and great grandparents - thank you.
